The largest window, labeled "Scarab of Ra", shows you your view of the interior of the pyramid. In this window you'll see the corridors of the mazes, and often you'll see objects or animals, and Egyptian hieroglyphs on the walls.
The view in this window will change as you move through the mazes. Normally, it changes once each time you click on an arrow button (see the Help section on "Moving Around" to learn about arrow buttons). But animals often move faster than you, so sometimes your view will change several times for one "click", to show you the motion of an animal.
If you have trouble understanding where the walls and doors are at first, use the "Which Way Can I Go?" command under the "Map" menu. It will tell you which directions you can go from where you're standing. Soon you'll know at a glance where you can and can't go, and you won't need "Which way?" any more.
The "cloud of dots" you can often see in this window is the dimness of distance: your lantern isn't really very bright.
